Red Dot vs. Holographic Sight
Share
Here is a quick down and dirty on the difference between a Red Dot and a Holographic sight.
Red Dot (Reflex): Uses an LED emitter bounced off a coated glass lens.
Pros: Unbeatable battery life (up to 50,000+ hours), lightweight, budget-friendly.
Cons: Can appear starburst-like if you have astigmatism; under a magnifier, the dot gets magnified along with the target.
Holographic Sight (e.g., EOTech): Uses a laser diode bouncing off mirrors to project a 3D hologram suspended in the glass.
Pros: The center 1 MOA dot stays precise under magnification (does not grow); faster target acquisition; works much better for shooters with astigmatism.
Cons: Chews through battery life (500–1,000 hours); heavier and more expensive.
So what should you go with?
Red Dot for standard home defense, budget builds, or set-and-forget battery life.
Holographic if you plan to run a magnifier or have astigmatism.
